Investments - "Waste Management Program"
"Waste Management Program" was a complex project aiming at essential modernization of waste management in the Kraków district, and it can be extended for whole Małopolska Region. This program introduces radical changes in waste management by departing from typical storing waste at landfills and creating a new system based on maximized waste material utilization, production of electricity and thermal energy supplying. The project "Waste Management Program" was financed by ISPA/Cohesion Found. Total investment cost was 22 730 000 EUR, including ISPA Founds of 14 092 000 EUR (62%).
The development of the Barycz landfill
Actually the Barycz landfill is the most modern facility in Poland. This landfill site has a capacity of 2 000 000 m3 of deposited waste. It fulfills a duty of providing waste utilization system by the Commune of Cracow and decreases the risk of arising the wild waste dumps. It is estimated that all the related activities undertaken within "Waste Management Program" together with landfill's enlargement shall significantly increase time of using this landfill.

Composting plant
The opening ceremony of the composting plant took place on 27 September 2005. According to "Waste Management Program" a composting plant for green waste at Barycz landfill has a capacity of 6000 ton per year. At this facility MPO compost only green waste from parks and gardens to make the process safer and ensure high compost quality. Compost is going to be used mainly at Barycz landfill.
Sorting plant
The opening ceremony of the sorting plant took place on 16 March 2006. Waste collected from street selection bins, companies, shops, restaurants, schools etc. is sorted as follows:
- Paper - into carton, cardboard, magazine and newspapers
- Glass - into in division to colour and transparent
- Plastic - all types separated to PET material (colour and transparent), wrappings (PEHD) and foil
- Metal - into iron and non-ferrous
The capacity of sorting plant is 20 000 ton of waste per year.
